The Journey
I am five days away from doing something I have dreamed about since I was a little girl: publishing a book.

I have been writing since my mom gave my first journal when I was six. I still have that journal.
It’s embarrassingly pink and has cats and teacups on it. I distinctly remember picking it out myself. I picked it because I thought it was pretty and it had one of those smooth squishy covers that felt solid in my hands. I also liked the lines on the pages. They were delicate and dotted and made the ink of the pen stand out against the white of the paper. It made the words on the page look important. It feels silly to say these are still things I look for when I am picking out a journal, but it’s true.
I finished writing my first book when I was thirteen. It was a high-fantasy adventure novel about a girl who finds out she is a long-lost princess and has to go on this epic journey to rediscover her heritage and reclaim her throne. I distinctly remember I finished writing it and then ten minutes later was sprinting to my parent’s truck to leave for a fishing trip for the weekend. My elated giddiness at finishing my first ever actual novel carried me through the weekend of adventuring in the mountains and on the water with my family.

These two things, my writing and adventures with family and friends have always been interlinked for me. So, it’s really no surprise that my first ever published book would be about fishing and the outdoors. These two things have been a part of my existence for as long as I can remember.
Breaking the Bubble Line: An Introduction to Fly Fishing for Women on the Water is as much of an instructional handbook of the basics of fly fishing as it is a love story written for my family, friends, and the natural world I grew up in. At least, I hope that’s what you get when you read it. There are memories and stories from my childhood as much as there is educational content for getting people new to fly fishing into the community and onto the water. It is my greatest hope that those of you who read it are inspired to find your peace and community in the outdoors.
